Joint pain and stiffness is a common problem, making up nearly 35% of all GP consultations.
Causes can range from injuries to arthritis to various inflammatory conditions. Private GPs at The Grosvenor Practice will listen to your health concerns regarding your joints and are able to examine, diagnose and treat a variety of different joint conditions.
There are many ways of managing joint pain depending on the underlying cause. Treatments range from strengthening exercises and painkillers through to surgery in the most severe of cases. For certain conditions a steroid injection may be appropriate.
Steroid Joint Injections with Dr Rupert Pemsel
Your initial 30-minute consultation includes a thorough medical history review and examination. If a steroid joint injection (sometimes called a cortisone injection) is appropriate, it can often be carried out during the same appointment. If additional time is needed or further planning is required, a separate appointment will be arranged.
Steroid injections, such as Depo-Medrone®, work by reducing inflammation within or around the joint, helping to relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness. They are commonly used to manage flare-ups of joint or tendon pain — particularly in arthritis — but they are not a cure.
Dr Rupert Pemsel offers steroid injections for:
Trigger finger or thumb
Small joints of the hand or foot
Thumb joint and wrist (including De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis)
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow
Shoulder conditions (Rotator Cuff Syndrome, Frozen Shoulder)
Knee pain, particularly osteoarthritis
Trochanteric Bursitis (hip)
The injection procedure — whether treating one or two joints — typically takes no more than 15 minutes.
Please note: steroid injections are not suitable for every patient and will only be offered following a full clinical assessment.
For knee arthritis, you may also wish to consider a Durolane injection — see below for more information.
Durolane Injections for Knee Osteoarthritis
We offer Durolane® injections for patients with knee osteoarthritis. Durolane contains hyaluronic acid — a substance naturally present in healthy joints — which helps lubricate and cushion the knee, reducing pain and improving mobility.
This single-injection is performed by Dr Rupert Pemsel under ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement. The procedure is quick and straightforward, with many patients experiencing relief lasting several months. For more information please click here.
