Effective weight loss requires significant commitment and hard work, along with sustained lifestyle adaptions. However, sometimes additional help is needed to get the results you want.
Dr Groom can support you with prescriptions for both oral and injectable weight loss medication alongside a weight loss programme tailored to your individual needs and lifestyle.
What are weight loss medications?
GLP-1 receptor agonists belong to a class of medications designed to help in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. They operate by imitating the actions of a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1 which is released by the gut in response to food intake. This hormone plays a pivotal role in regulating blood sugar levels.
These medications work by stimulating the GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas to secrete insulin. This action aids in reducing blood sugar levels, particularly after meals, without causing a significant risk of low blood sugar.
Additionally, GLP-1 receptor agonists slow down the absorption of glucose from the digestive tract and decrease the production of glucagon, a hormone responsible for elevating blood sugar.

One of the noteworthy advantages of GLP-1 receptor agonists is their positive impact on body weight. They facilitate weight loss by curbing appetite and delaying the emptying of the stomach, resulting in a feeling of fullness. In clinical trials, some GLP-1 receptor agonists have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits, showing potential reducing the risks of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular complications in patients with diabetes.
The GLP-1 receptor agonist Semaglutide is licensed in the UK for weight loss and comes as either a tablet or an injectable. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, though these usually diminish with time.
For optimum success, weight loss medication should be used in conjunction with a personalised nutrition and exercise plan, and monitored by an expert who can advise and adjust doses accordingly. A collaborative approach such as that offered by Dr Groom at The Grosvenor Practice is essential for achieving the best outcomes possible for weight loss.
Please note, due to current drug shortages, there may be a delay in being able to order the medication.
