Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing is an effective way to identify women at increased risk of cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus transmitted through sexual contact; certain high-risk types are linked to abnormal cervical cells that can, in some cases, lead to cervical cancer.
There are two ways to perform cervical screening: HPV testing alone, which the NHS uses as its primary screening test, or HPV testing with cytology, where cervical cells are also examined under a microscope. We can offer either approach, depending on your preference.
Screens for the presence of high-risk HPV. If HPV is detected, cytology is then carried out on the same sample to check for abnormal cells.
If HPV is not detected, no further testing is usually carried out.
No screening test is perfect. False negatives are uncommon but possible, including the rare situation of abnormal cells occurring without detectable HPV.
The laboratory checks for high-risk HPV and also examines the cervical cells under a microscope, regardless of the HPV result.
Some patients prefer this for the additional reassurance of cell-level checking.
Often chosen by patients with previous abnormal results, current symptoms or specific concerns who want an additional level of checking.

Yes. We can provide contraception advice and help you understand the options available, including pills, patches, vaginal rings, injections, intrauterine systems, copper coils and contraceptive implants.
At present, we are unable to insert contraceptive coils or contraceptive implants for contraception.
This includes hormonal coils such as Mirena® and Kyleena®, non-hormonal copper coils and contraceptive implants.
We are in the process of applying for the necessary service approval at Medcentres Plus to allow Dr Davina Woodward to resume this service, and we will update our website as soon as it becomes available.
Coils for heavy menstrual bleeding or menopause care may still be inserted where clinically appropriate.
Not necessarily. NHS cervical screening is an established national programme.
Some patients choose private cervical screening for convenience, additional reassurance, or because they have specific concerns.

Cervical screening is designed as a screening test and may not be the only investigation needed.
Most patients find the test uncomfortable rather than painful, and it is usually very quick.
Your GP will explain what is happening and you can ask to stop at any time.
