Mole Mapping in Salisbury: What It Is and When to Book
Skin changes are common, and most moles are not a cause for alarm. What many people want is time, a careful look, and a record they can compare against later.
At The Grosvenor Practice, Dr Rupert Pemsel offers GP-led dermatology at Millstream House, Avon Approach, in central Salisbury. That includes a dedicated mole mapping appointment, as well as shorter assessments for a specific mole or lesion.
This article explains what mole mapping is, who it may be for, and how it differs from a standard mole check. It is not a substitute for urgent NHS care.
What is mole mapping?
Mole mapping is a structured way of recording moles and skin lesions so they can be compared over time.
In a 45-minute appointment (£250), detailed dermatoscope images of your skin lesions are captured. Size, shape and location are recorded securely. Those images become a baseline for later visits, which can help show whether something has changed in a way that needs a closer look, a different treatment, or referral.
Mole mapping or a 30-minute mole assessment?
These are different appointments. Booking the right one saves time and avoids paying for more than you need.
Skin lesion / mole assessment — 30 minutes, £135**
The usual first step if you are worried about one mole, a new lump, or a small number of specific spots. Dr Pemsel reviews the concern, examines the area (with a dermatoscope where helpful), and discusses next steps.
Mole mapping — 45 minutes, £250**
Better if you have multiple moles and want a baseline record of the skin, or if closer monitoring has been recommended.
If you are unsure, describe the concern to reception when you book, or start with the 30-minute assessment. Dr Pemsel can advise if mapping would be more useful later.
CryoPen® treatment for certain benign lesions (for example some warts, skin tags or milia) is £45 per suitable lesion, after assessment. If there is time, it can be done in the same appointment. If not, a separate visit is arranged. Dr Pemsel will discuss this with you at the time.
Who might mole mapping suit?
Mole mapping may be suitable if you:
- Have a large number of moles and want a clear baseline
- Have noticed moles or lesions changing and want a fuller mapping appointment rather than a single-spot check
- Have a personal or family history of skin cancer, and closer monitoring has been suggested
- Prefer a private, unhurried GP-led skin assessment in Salisbury, with time built in
You do not need an NHS GP referral. You can book directly.
What happens in the appointment?
You will see Dr Rupert Pemsel, GP specialising in dermatology and complex care.
Typically the visit includes:
- A review of your concerns and any relevant history
- A structured examination of moles and lesions
- Dermatoscope images where helpful, with size, shape and location recorded
- A baseline for later comparison
- Clear advice on monitoring, self-checks, or referral if needed
We do not offer skin biopsies or surgical excisions at the practice. If a lesion needs biopsy, removal or specialist assessment, we can advise on next steps and arrange referral where needed. We work alongside NHS care, not instead of it.
Pay-as-you-go fees are as above. CryoPen®, where suitable, is always charged separately at £45 per lesion. It can be done in the same assessment if there is time; sometimes it needs a separate visit, which would be discussed then.
Health Plan subscriptions include unlimited GP appointments. Mole mapping and skin assessments are included on the plan; cryotherapy is charged separately (£45 per lesion).
